This renovation transformed a 1967 home into a high-performance, future-ready residence designed for the evolving needs of a growing family. Originally challenged by poor thermal performance, inefficient layout, and limited functionality, the home underwent a comprehensive interior and mechanical upgrade while maintaining the original exterior, including window and door locations.

Through creative and thoughtful design, interior walls were removed and ceilings vaulted to improve spatial flow and connectivity between living areas. This allowed the kitchen to emerge as the central gathering space for everyday living and entertaining. At its core is a generously proportioned island tailored for an avid home cook, paired with custom millwork and thoughtfully integrated storage solutions. Skylights and light tubes were also added to bring in abundant natural light.

Carrying this renewed sense of openness and cohesion into the adjacent living room, a new gas fireplace framed with custom millwork establishes a refined focal point, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere that naturally draws the space and people together.

Bathrooms were thoughtfully reconfigured to provide a functional main bath and a new three-piece ensuite for the primary bedroom. On the lower level, the former mechanical and laundry area was transformed into a fully functional and safe laundry/mudroom. Another portion of the basement was converted into an ADA-compliant suite for aging parents, complete with a kitchenette, sitting/TV area, private bedroom, and bathroom—ensuring comfort, independence, and accessibility.

Energy performance was significantly improved through the installation of a heat pump with a six-zone distribution system, on-demand hot water, upgraded insulation and vapor barriers, high-efficiency windows and in-floor radiant heating in all bathrooms.

Construction incorporated industry’s best practices, including structural beam installation to replace load-bearing walls, electrical upgrades to a 200-amp service, re-sheeted floor assemblies, and replacement of the original wood-burning fireplace with a high-efficiency gas unit. Existing materials were reused where possible, and demolition materials were salvaged or donated, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability and long-term performance.

The result is a home that seamlessly blends modern comfort, functional design, and sustainability—delivering a future-ready residence where a growing family can thrive.
